American painter and photographer Richard Prince has been producing pop culture-inspired art for more than thirty years. In this 1990 collection of works, he presents some of his joke paintings, ganged up photographs, and painted car hoods. He began his Joke paintings by redrawing cartoons, then just used the jokes in paintings, written underneath layers of paint. His Gang work involved printing upwards of nine photos of similar subject on one sheet, with white space between. The Hood paintings were actually car hoods that he sent away for. He then cut them into a squared-off shapes and painted them with car colors. From the artist: «I always thought my work would look like a giant magazine. There’d be a joke section, a photograph section, a painting section.»
