Real Venice to be auctioned by Phillips de Pury & Company

3 / 11 / 2011

The Phillips de Pury & Company Photographs Sale included one work by each artist . Estimates ranged from £800 – £40,000. Photographs of Venice by fourteen leading international artists were auctioned in aid of Venice in Peril at Phillips de Pury & Company, London, on 3 November 2011. In 2010 the artists were invited by Venice in Peril to visit the city and create a portfolio of meaningful and original photographic images of Venice, perhaps the most photographed but seriously threatened city in the world.

The resulting images were included in a major exhibition entitled Real Venice, curated by Elena Foster and the Ivorypress Team at the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore, Venice, as part of that year’s Venice Biennale. Selected works were on view at Somerset House, London until 11 December 2011 (www.somersethouse.org.uk). The artists were: Lynne Cohen, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Antonio Girbés, Nan Goldin, Pierre Gonnord, Dionisio Gonzalez, Candida Höfer, Tiina Itkonen, Mimmo Jodice, Tim Parchikov, Matthias Schaller, Jules Spinatsch, Robert Walker and Hiroshi Watanabe. Each artist generously donated a portfolio of their photographs to be sold in aid of Venice in Peril. Whilst the majority of works in the collection are available for sale privately (www.realvenice.org), one work by each artist was included in the Phillips de Pury & Company Photographs Sale.

Venue: Phillips de Pury & Company, Howick Place, London, SW1P 1BB
