Luis Gordillo

Luis Gordillo (Seville, Spain, 1934) works and lives in Madrid. He holds a Law degree and began studying Fine Arts in Seville. At the beginning of his professional career, he was influenced by informalism and pop art. Subsequently, he approached the New Figuration and what is described as the New Figuration of Madrid during the 1970s. During the 1980s and 1990s, his style evolved towards a deeper and more abstract expression. He has received numerous awards and distinctions, including the Velázquez award for the Visual Arts and an honourary PhD by the Fine Arts School of the Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha in Cuenca. He is a knight of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and has received the Círculo de Bellas Artes Medal in Madrid and the Gold Medal for Merit in the Fine Arts and the National Visual Arts award of Spain, among others. His works have been exhibited in art institutions such as the MNCARS, Madrid, Spain; the Kunstmuseum, Bonn, Germany; the MACBA, Barcelona, Spain; the Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany; or the Meadows Museum, Dallas, US, and is included in prominent collections such as the MNCARS, the Museo de Bellas Artes of Bilbao, the IVAM, the MACBA, the Fundación La Caixa or the Fundación Juan March, all in Spain.
