New, never used. The most complete catalogue raisonné of Gerhard Richter’s editions from 1965 to the present, edited by Hubertus Butin, his assistant from 1996 to 1998.\n\nGerhard Richter, who was born in Dresden in 1932, is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding and best-known German artists alive today. Yet, although his paintings are widely exhibited, his editions have attracted relatively little public attention.\nThis catalogue raisonné, compiled through intensive research over a period of many years by art historian Hubertus Butin, Richter’s former assistant, documents the full range of graphic and photographic editions as well as the artist’s books, multiples, and editions in oil realized by the artist between 1965 and 2004. All works are presented in four-color illustrations for the first time, and three essays shed new light on the significance of Richter’s editions within his oeuvre.\nIn the editions, Richter has developed an almost encyclopedic system of pictorial practice, subjecting artistic media, genres, and historical paradigms to wide-ranging analytical reflection. In this process, he channels his deliberations on the changing cultural meanings of image and representation into a critical examination of the complex conditions and possibilities of artistic production in this age.
