Beatriz Milhazes (*1960 in Rio de Janeiro) takes the basic \nmotifs for her colorful paintings from the tropical natural \nenvironnent of her homeland, as well as from the history and \nculture of the former Portuguese colony. Apparent in her \nlively compositions of abstract ornaments, arabesques, \nflowers, geometrical shapes, and rhythmic patterns is the \ninfluence of artists such as Henri Matisse, Piet Mondrian, and \nSonia Delaunay-Terk. Milhazes spreads out a planar space \nwhose depths emerge from the easy, colorful dynamics of the \ndecorative elements. Her unique technique recalls collage and \ndecal images. This publication presents beautiful \nreproductions of four new monumental paintings which \nthematically explore_the four seasons, accompanied by \nimpressive collages and a graceful mobile—references to the \nmixed-media approach of the artist, who also designs and \nmakes theatrièal sets, façades, textiles, and ceramics.
