In 2008 I spent a few months in Portugal. I had a base in Lisbon and travelled the country by car with a map but never a clear destination, photographing the landscape I encountered. My eyes were drawn to signs of a fatalistic approach to life and its adversities, the ever lasting inequality of society and a culture of making do.

In Europe, with an overall good level of wealth and education, we have been feeling safe and sure to have put struggle and inequality behind us. But as global economic, demographic and environmental shifts bring destabilisation, we Europeans become aware of the vulnerability of our situation.
