Stefan Moses

Stefan Moses, winner of the 2014 Lovis Corinth Award, is one of the most important German photographers of the latter half of the 20th century. Conceptual and life photography conjoin in his work to create a new pictorial language. Germany and the Germans – this has been the great theme of his life’s work for more than half a century. Portraits of writers, scientists, politicians and artists, but also of ordinary people in West and East Germany established the photographer’s reputation as a chronicler of postwar German society. nStefan Moses was born in 1928 in the Silesian town of Liegnitz (today Legnica in Poland) and has lived and worked in Munich since 1950. As a staff photographer for magnum, Spiegel and Stern magazines, his pictures helped shape the history of photography after 1945. Since 1960, his central subjects have come from what for him is »the most interesting country in the world: Germany.« Three photo cycles created over long periods of time from Stefan Moses’s image cosmos – Germans – West, Germans – East, Germany’s Emigrants and Artists Make Masks – are now being shown for the first time in this ensemble at the Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie Regensburg and published in book form.
