These photographs – rejects from a commercial photolab in Boston only a stone’s throw from Bunker’s Hill, one of the key landmarks of the American War of Independence – were taken at the time of the Vietnam War – a pivotal period in American history. Here is the intimacy that danced in the eyes of family photographers as they framed the everyday lives of ordinary people – as it was in New England in the Fall of 1968.

The images, predominantly prints from early 126mm ‘point-and-shoot’ cameras, are an uninterpreted presentation of everyday life. Reflecting both private and public spheres of consciousness, they convey unmediated perspectives of mores, values, and icons through what was intended to be personal visual documentation in its most direct form.
