Alasdair McLellan’s two-part photobook “Home And Away” takes an extensive look back at the entirety of the British photographer’s career from 1987 until 2022.
McLellan, who was thirteen when he started working as a photographer in 1987, has embarked on an exceptional career that includes campaigns for Burberry, Louis Vuitton, series for 032c and Vogue, and music videos for The XX and Saint Etienne, as well as the album cover for Adele’s album 25.
“Home and Away,” however, offers an almost relaxed, laid-back series of arresting portraits, observations and captures, from prearranged and professionally shot works to shots that seem the result of momentary impulse. McLellan’s photography is defined by genuine affection, whether he photographs storefronts, a young Tom Hardy, stray dogs, or a man wearing nothing but a t-shirt.

“I find myself thinking about the photos I took as a teenager in Doncaster and the various influences that inspired me to be a photographer in the first place. I suppose it’s a return to simpler times; it was just me and the subject rather than having 30 people standing behind me waiting for the picture to be taken, as it often is now. But at the heart of the pictures then and now, it’s still that same relationship—it’s only who or what you photograph that really matters.”
