American painter and photographer Richard Prince has been producing pop culture-inspired art for more than thirty years, and this latest book, “4 X 4,” brings together in one volume a survey of his varied creations. Known especially for mixed media collage works combining photography, painting, and other media, his earliest works generated a great deal of controversy (not to mention lawsuits). By re-photographing and reusing photographs that appeared in newspapers and those of other photographers, he sought to reexamine these original images and comment on their status as icons of advertising, glamour, and fact. His “Untitled (Cowboy)” was a re-photograph of several cigarette advertisements, and may be his best known work, fetching more than $1 million at a Christie’s auction.
