Aniu

Aniu (Guangdong, China, 1969). 'This series began in 2000, at the start of a new century, when everything seemed to be full of hope, especially for China, which was undergoing rapid development. This was particularly true in Shenzhen, where I had been living and working for almost ten years, and where people converged from all parts of the country hoping to realise their dreams. I was a photojournalist at a newspaper, a profession I despised but from which I benefited tremendously. It was startling for me to realise a more truthful picture, one frequently characterised by the miseries inherent in economic progress, where conscience is often neglected in the name of material development. I am not seeking any explicit disclosure of truth, something for which I lack the capacity. I am only asking questions through photography.' Aniu
