The poetry of form
Like Japanese haiku, the drawings of contemporary artist Richard Tuttle are minimal and precise, abstract and evocative. Tuttle’s art and his unique twenty-year collaboration with New York City art collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel are celebrated in this handsome catalog of an exhibition organized by the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the Instituto Valenciano De Arte Moderno in Spain. «The Poetry of Form» presents thirty-seven color and eighteen black-and-white reproductions of Tuttle’s drawings, accompanied by a series of essays that illuminate the artist’s post-minimalist style. In 1992 the Vogels gave more than 300 of Tuttle’s drawings, sculptures, and prints – the largest single collection of his work – to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. A full checklist of the Vogel Collection at the National Gallery of Art is included in the catalog.
