Raphael
A luxurious publication of the works of Raphaello Sanzio, one of the greatest painters of the Italian High Renaissance. Raphaels extraordinary productivity, despite a brief career that ended with his death at the age of 37, resulted in a large body of work that includes such masterpieces as The School of Athens from the Vatican Raphael Rooms, portraits, drawings, tapestry cartoons and religious paintings. This sumptuously produced volume features an updated, full-colour selection of the artists works made by Ludwig Goldscheider, co-founder of Phaidon Press, for the original 1941 edition. An updated essay by William E Suida is accompanied by a new introduction from Renaissance specialist Bette Talvacchia, putting Raphael and his school into a contemporary context. Elegant design, fine papers and tipped-on image plates make this a true collectors edition.
