Over the last 30 years, Martin Puryear has created a body of work that defies categorization, creating sculpture that examines identity, culture and history. This book accompanies a November exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art that follows Puryear’s development from his first solo show, in 1977, to new works that will be presented for the first time. In 2008 the exhibition will travel to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
