Cecily Brown: Based On A True Story
London-born painter Cecily Brown, whose important New York presence includes representation by Gagogian, inclusion in the 2004 Whitney Biennial and several shows at P.S.1, introduces new work that moves from her signature body-based reality to a broad based abstraction. Unlike Brown’s early paintings, which were characterized by recognizable, usually erotic subject matter, these current works are more color tableaux that suggest abstract realism, an invitation to play with the visual forms beyond the idea of a fixed meaning. The layers of paint seem to condense into figuration, then explode again into abstraction. Includes two essays, reproductions of paintings along with installation photos.
