The Architecture of von Gerkan, Marg + Partners

Meinhard von Gerkan, Volkwin Marg and their partners are one of the most innovative and prolific architectural offices in Germany. In the past 30 years they have planned and constructed buildings in most major German cities and their style has influenced many architects working in Asia. The range of their projects is, however, not limited to any one type of building. They have designed small-scale homes, the interior of Germanys high speed train—the ICE—hotels, theaters and concert halls, office buildings, commercial centers, hospitals, and research facilities. The Architecture of von Gerkan, Marg and Partners presents 50 of the groups finest and most original architectural designs.\nVon Gerkan, Marg and Partners became internationally known as a team of airport architects when, in 1975, they designed the Berlin/Tegel building with its drive-in airplane terminal for stacked parking. This innovative design has been further developed to transform the departure and arrival halls at Stuttgart and Hamburg airports. Von Gerkan, Marg and Partners are internationally recognized not only for their completed projects, but also for their designs. Key examples are their designs for the reconstruction of the Reichstag parliament building in Berlin, and the main hall of the massive and futuristic Lehrter Bahnhof railway station, also in Germanys capital. With their ambitious proposals for the urban reconstruction of Bucharest and railway projects such as Stuttgart 21 and Frankfurt 21, they have proven themselves as visionary urban designers and planners as well.
