Internationally acclaimed artist Wolfgang Tillmans has emancipated himself from being a photographer of the generation X for alternative magazines like ID and Spex, or the big fashion magazines like Vogue. Now in his early 30s, he has developed into an internationally recognised artist of contemporary photography and has already received many important art prizes and accolades, becoming winner of the Turner Prize 2000.

After publication of his artist’s book Concorde and a second title, Soldiers, Tillmans has produced Portraits – a more rigidly structured, ‘classical’ book. However, just as before, he shows that he knows how to realise classical criteria as precisely as he is able to sensitively respect the personality and the biographical perspective of his portraits. It is a fine line that he walks brilliantly and one that has already earned him a place among the most respected living photographers.
