Ivo Mesquita is the Artistic Director of the State Art Gallery of São Paulo in Brazil. Previously he was the Assistant Curator of the São Paulo Biennial Foundation (1980-88), Guest Curator of the 20th São Paulo Biennial (1989), Guest Curator of the 24th São Paulo Biennial (1998), Director of the Museum of Modern Art in São Paulo (1999-2000), Chief Curator of the State Art Gallery of São Paulo (2006-2012) and Chief Curator of the 28th São Paulo Biennial (2008).

Between 1996 and 2007 Ivo was Visiting Professor at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, New York and as an independent curator he has organised exhibition projects and other collaborations with several institutions, including the Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York, Winnipeg Art Gallery, Manitoba, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Museum of Contemporary Art of Monterrey, Reina Sofía Museum, Madrid, Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona and “la Caixa” Foundation, Barcelona. He was the Curator of the Brazilian Pavilion at the 48th Venice Biennale in 1999 and the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009 and Co-curator of inSITE97 and inSITE 2000-2001 in San Diego-Tijuana. He has been a board member of the International Committee of ICOM for Museums and Collections of Modern Art since 2007.

He has also contributed articles to numerous other publications, such as inSITE97: Private Time in Public Space, Latin American Art in the XX Century and Modernidade: Vanguardas Artísticas na América Latina.
