Blanca Miró Skoudy ‘Dibujos’ – Opening at Ivorypress 26/02/20

On 26 February 2020 Ivorypress presented artist Blanca Miró Skoudy’s first solo exhibition in Madrid.

Miró’s work embraces multiple creative fields, from illustration to design, video making and scenography. This exhibition includes selections from the foundation and inspiration behind her pursuit of all these artistic disciplines: drawing.

Blanca Miro’s precise lines trace bodies that reconfigure the naturalist point of view; the limbs, eyes, hair and mouths of her figures are assembled using a multiplicity of perspectives, recalling the French and Spanish surrealist traditions of Cocteau, Miró, Picasso and Breton. Miró’s stripped-down drawings often appear alone and decontextualised in calm and blissful scenes. Only rarely are her figures accompanied by elements such as earrings, guitars, glasses or chairs that further revisit the surrealist imaginary.

Always in the liminal space between abstraction and figuration, Miró’s works move to explore universal and complex themes through the crystalisation of the everyday. The openness displayed by her drawings is not only clear in the formal sense, embodied by her use of thin lines, but at the conceptual level—the artist doesn’t seek to define the themes explored in her work, therefore allowing for a dialogue to emerge between the viewer and the open object.

The female body, the principal theme represented in Miró’s work, materialises in the perfect balance between sharp angles and sinuous curves that are brought together through the use of feminine symbols. This constant revisiting of the figure of Venus reveals a profound concern for redefining the meanings of the feminine today.
