José Manuel Ballester. Museos en blanco
Museos en blanco is a book by the Spanish artist José Manuel Ballester, specially commissioned by Ivorypress as part of our LiberArs series. The pictures we can see reproduced here, and which were exhibited at the Ivorypress Art Gallery, are the result of the process of ’emptying museums’: in these images, they are transformed from their roles as containers of artworks to become artworks in themselves.
The photographs in this book were taken between 2004 and 2015 in the gallery of museums that were empty or under construction at the time, including the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Centro Cultural Conde Duque, Madrid; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Centro Cultural de Brasília, Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid; Vitra Design Museum, Weil am Rhein; Hagia Sophia Museum, Istanbul; CaixaForum, Madrid; Fondation Beyeler, Basel; Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo; Topkapi Palace, Istanbul; Oca do Ibirapuera, Sao Paulo; MoMA, New York; Antiguo Convento de San Agustín, Seville; Real Fábrica de Artillería de Sevilla, Seville; Fundación Botín, Santander; Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid; Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; Museo de la Evolución Humana, Burgos and at the Art Basel Fair in 2011 and the Shanghai Expo of 2010.
