Wong Suk Ki: Collector
Photography is charismatic in nature. It seems to reflect the reality, but it actually hides emotions, thoughts and time from the spectators. Seeing through the tiny hole, I can tell lies and construct my own world. In Collector, as my first photo compilation, I attempt to reveal different states of mind, feeling and experience through photographs mostly taken in Hong Kong, Finland and China from 1997 to 2005. The photographs also reflect the intricate relationship between the various places, my mind and my body. That relationship is never static but dynamic. While a new place opens up new ways of thinking, those existing beliefs are to be buried. This cycle of unfolding and burying continues to take place in my mind. This compilation also records a process in which memories were re-ordered. Before I went to Finland, my life was in chaos. Overwhelmed by anxiety and frustrations, I had spent most of my time on meditating, daydreaming and sleeping. Having a clearer and more stable mind, I re-examine and re-order the past to present a collage of memories. Hence, the meanings of photographs to me have become much more sophisticated.
