The complex relationship between Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat has captivated the art world of yesterday and today. Warhol was already famous around the world, and Basquiat, a sort of unofficial ambassador for the coolest New York, was a talent from downtown that quickly emerged from the graffiti scene. Together they forged an electrifying personal and professional association. Harold, a prolific documentalist of his own world, photographed and wrote extensively about his friendship with Basquiat with the New York of the 1980s as a background, revealing not only the emotional depth of their relationship but also its ambiguities, differences and complexities. Produced in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation and the heirs of Jean-Michel Basquiat, this book narrates the friendship of the couple in hundreds of unpublished photographs of Basquiat with a large group of characters ranging from Madonna to Grace Jones and from Keith Haring to Fela Kuti. The images are accompanied by entries from the legendary Andy Warhol Journals, a selection of artistic works that Warhol and Basquiat made together and numerous memories. Poignant, intimate and sometimes even sarcastic, Warhol on Basquiat is a voyeurist look at the lives of two of the brightest stars in modern art.
