South East – signed
Signed copy. LIMITED QUANTITY Designed as a companion book to his critically-acclaimed monograph South Central (Nazraeli Press, 2006), Mark Steinmetz here turns his focus to Athens and Atlanta, New Orleans, Memphis and East Tennessee, and the roads between. Highly regarded for his black-and-white portraits, Steinmetz is renowned for producing powerful pictures which capture the strong sense of displacement and isolation that is felt by many young Americans. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This first printing of South East is limited to 1,000 copies. It opens with an introduction by Peter Galassi, chief curator of the Department of Photography at The Museum of Modern Art in New York. [In South Central], Steinmetz describes his subjects in black and white with a 6 x 9 medium format camera that lushly accentuates detail. Through the genres of portraiture and landscape he gives us a sense of life lived at the margins but it is not hopeless. These people simply seem resigned to the fact that this is their place in life. 5b4
