Sheila Hicks & The Dutch – Why Not?
Published on the occasion of a retrospective of work by Sheila Hicks at the Textiel Museum in Tilburg, this book traces the pioneering textile artists influences, from her extensive travels through Latin America as a student to the New Tapestry Movement of the 1960s, as well as numerous examples of commissioned work in the Netherlands. Her works were in keeping with changing views in the art world and contemporary art practices of the time, with sculptors adopting non-traditional materials and museum curators recognising an emancipation of media in the applied arts. Only recently, however, has work by Hicks been widely accepted into the canon of visual art.
