One Day: Ten Photographers

In 2009 photo artist Harvey Benge had the idea of getting a group of photographers together to shoot a book in a day. On June 21, 2010—the day of the solstice—ten of the world’s leading photographers each shot a series for a book in different places around the world. The result is a truly unique collector’s item, a boxed set including ten individual and elaborately designed hardcover books.nnJessica Backhaus lives in Berlin and New York. Since 2005 she has published four photobooks and has exhibited internationally.nnGerry Badger is a London photo historian, critic, and photographer. His published books include The Photobook— A History.nnHarvey Benge works from both Auckland and Paris, and has exhibited internationally.nnJohn Gossage’s groundbreaking The Pond (1985) remains one of the most important photobooks of the medium.nnWith his first monograph House Hunting (2001) Todd Hido became a rising star of the American art scene.nnBased in the Netherlands, documentary photographer Rob Hornstra predominantly works on long-term projects around the world.nnRinko Kawauchi has become one of the most celebrated photographers of her generation in Japan.nnAustrian photographer Eva Maria Ocherbauer lives in Berlin and has published several photobooks.nnMartin Parr bridges the divide between art and documentary photography. He is member of Magnum agency, and a world authority on the photobook. He lives in Bristol, England.nnMinneapolis-based Alec Soth’s widely acclaimed first monograph Sleeping by the Mississippi was published in 2004, followed by Niagara and Dog Days Bogota.nnGerry Badger is a photo historian, critic, and photographer. He writes and lectures on photography regularly and has curated a number of exhibitions, including The Photographer as Printmaker’ for the Arts Council of Great Britain and Through the Looking Glass: Post-war British Photography’ for the Barbican Arts Centre, London. His published books include Collecting Photography and books on Eugène Atget and Chris Killip; THE PHOTOBOOK: A HISTORY: VOLUME I and II (with Martin Parr). He lives in London.nnHarvey Benge has been working full time as a camera artist since 1992. He is interested in the international urban social landscape and the notion of parallel lives. “While something is happening here, something else is happening over there”. While the main thrust of his work has been through published work, he has also exhibited internationally and has work in major public and private collections. He works from both Auckland and Paris.nnMartin Parr bridges the divide between art and documentary photography. His studies of the idiosyncrasies of mass culture and consumerism around the world, his innovative imagery and his prolific output have placed him firmly at the forefront of contemporary art. A member of the international photo agency Magnum, Parr is an avid collector of photobooks and a world authority on the photobook. He lives in Bristol, England.nnAlec Soth was born in 1969 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he continues to live and work. He is the recipient of major fellowships from the McKnight and Jerome Foundations, and was awarded the 2003 Santa Fe Prize for Photography. His photographs are represented in major public collections including The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, and have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide. Soth’s widely acclaimed first monograph, Sleeping by the Mississippi, was published by Steidl in 2004, followed by Niagara and Dog Days Bogota in 2006 and 2007 respectively. Soth is represented by Gagosian Gallery in New York and Weinstein Gallery in Minneapolis. He is an associate photographer with Magnum Photos.
