In the beginning was the Word. More precisely: a rumor that Max Eulitz boarded a plane to Kyiv in 2019. He followed the fame of a burgeoning new techno club – nameless but full of promise. During a residency at the Goethe-Institut in Kyiv, he watched a massive Soviet-era brewery transform into a nameless club – a hub of subculture hell-bent on taking on the great dance cathedrals of the western world.
Notes on 41 brings together a series of essays that chronicle the circumstances in which this club came into being, outlining the structural challenges and historical context that give this place in Kiev’s post-Maidan landscape such a dynamism. The architectural monument and its metamorphosis were at the center of the research and stand pars pro toto for the complexity of the overall social and political situation in contemporary Ukraine.

Max Eulitz, born in Leipzig in 1987, lives and works as an artist and author in Berlin.
