Photographs by Julius Shulman (1910-2009) showed the world the Californian dream. His images of architecture in the south of the west coast of the USA in the middle of the last century not only captured the structural, functional and design elements of each building but also the context of its location and its inhabitants in a complete and evocative perspective of A lifestyle. Over time, talent would lead Shulman to travel the world and create, little by little, one of the most irresistible visual architecture chronologies. This new edition of Modernism Rediscovered by TASCHEN, which includes more than 400 architectural jewels in images from the author’s archives, represents an immense cultural treasure for an affordable price. Each project and photography were personally selected from more than 260,000 images by Benedikt Taschen, who has enjoyed a close relationship with Shulman and his work since the publication of Julius Shulman: Architecture and Its Photography. The projects, which document the enormous scope of modern aesthetics, include especially the coast of California, but also the rest of the United States, as well as Mexico, Israel and Hong Kong. All are portrayed with their characteristic sharpness to understand space and context, and their brilliant and intuitive sense for composition. The images are contextualized thanks to an introduction signed by the photography critic Owen Edwards; an extensive biography of Shulman by Philip J. Ethington, historian at the University of Southern California; descriptions of the decorative elements in the images written by Peter Loughrey, the founder of the auction house Los Angeles Modern Auctions, and biographies of key architects. In addition, the book includes reflections of Shulman himself and transcriptions of conversations held over several months with the art writer Hunter Drohojowska-Philp portraying the era.
