Written in the last three decades, Boris Groys’s essays on the entropic logic of culture, art and the museum, on the collection, the politics of the avant-garde and the medial character of man and the real – the theory of media is the ideology of our time – they are brilliant exercises in intellectual fencing: they combine the rigor of knowledge, a clear and elegant style, and sharp arguments supplied with subtlety. Groys is measured in them with the most difficult opponent of an essayist: his own present. Almost each text begins with a respectful nod to the usual ways of thinking, to end each episode leaving the reader so touched as to continue reflecting and begin to imagine things in other ways.
