Gabriel Orozco The Samurai Tree. Invariants

This elaborate artist’s book by Gabriel Orozco examines all possible mutations within a self-defined spatial and colour system based on the ‘Knight’s move’ (here the Samurai’s move) within a game of chess. On each sheet a circle is drawn in the centre; moving out from this point, a sequence of larger or smaller circles is drawn until the borders of the square are reached. Orozco has created a series of 672 digital prints, 50 x 50 cm each, which follow these rules and represent all possible movements and variations. The original prints were exhibited at Museum Ludwig, Cologne in 2006 – 2007.
