Fictional Excerpts, Notes, Interviews, Scrapbooks (1969-2003)
This book gathers together texts written by the artist between 1966 and the present day, interviews he gave over the same period, as well as the first documentation of his scrapbooks. Containing original drawings, photographs, and collages simply pasted onto sheets of brown wrapping paper, these works relate to the famous ‘scattered’ floor pieces that the artist has produced since 1966.
Based on an exhibition held at the Cabinet des estampes du Musée d’art et d’histoire in Geneva that brought several examples of these books together, this publication attempts to recreate the particular quality of the scrapbooks. Printed images are pasted onto a twenty-four-page insert in order to highlight the specific quality of the originals.
The publication of this volume parallels the recent interest shown by international institutions in Barry Le Va’s work. Solo exhibitions are scheduled in February 2005 at the ICA Philadelphia and in 2006 at the Fundaçao de Serralves in Porto.
Published in collaboration with the Cabinet des estampes du Musée d’art et d’histoire in Geneva.
