Evocations
As artist, educator, art historian and critic, Carl Chiarenzas influence on the American photography scene has been tremendous. A living example to generations of students, Chiarenza has for decades managed a number of careers simultaneously. He has written articles and reviews for publication since 1957, during which time his own work has exhibited at over 70 solo and 200 group exhibitions; he has lectured throughout the country; and seen his work and writings reviewed and reproduced in over 175 publications. Evocations brings together 80 of Chiarenzas most important photographs from the mid-1980s to 2000, documenting his artistic output during that important period. Beautifully printed in duotone and process color on matt art paper, Evocations is a powerful and long overdue report on the work of one of our own national treasures. Chiarenzas photographs are represented in the permanent collections of such institutions as the Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In 1999, he was elected Honored Educator at the Society of Photographic Education National Conference.
