Exhibition held at Galleria nazionale d’arte moderna, Roma. Summary: This catalogue throws light on art which is still little-known in Italy and is characterised by some stunning photography. The central focus of this exhibition is a nucleus of works still relatively unknown to the general public, going back to Cindy Sherman’s first years of artistic production; together with the works of the American artist, photographer and director is a consistent group of photographs by Francesca Woodman, who despite her very brief existence, is considered one of the most influential artistic photographers of the end of the 20th century. Other names include Eleanor Antin, Hannah Wilke, Birgit Jürgenssen, and Valie Export. Although most of them do not consider, or have not specifically dubbed, their work as feminist, many of their works carry feminist overtones: the body, often the artist’s own, and the stereotype of womanhood as projected through the media of the press, television and the cinema.
