Arbus had a liking for aphorisms; in a letter to Marvin Israel on 12 January 1961 she noted that ‘the world is full of fictional characters looking for their stories.’ This monograph was published to accompany a retrospective exhibition of Arbus’s work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in the year following her suicide.
