Copiado por el sol. Los talbotipos de los Annals of the Artists of Spain de W. S. Maxwell (cat. razona
In 1848 Sir William Stirling published three volumes for his project, Annals of the Artists of Spain, the first comprehensive history of Spanish Art. In the same year, he gifted his relatives, friends, collaborators, Hispanophile colleagues and libraries copies of a fourth volume, entitled Talbotype illustrations, and which contained photographic reproductions of some of the works examined in Annals. Its importance cannot be underestimated, as it was the world’s first book on the history of art to be illustrated with photographs. Only fifty copies, in two different sizes, were printed. Currently, the whereabouts of only twenty-five of them are known: one in the Museo Nacional del Prado. This publication is an exhaustive catalogue raisonné of said volume, of which a perfect facsimile copy has been prepared for the occasion.
