Fra Angelico, one of the great masters of the Florentine Renaissance, was born when the fifteenth century was about to begin. Around 1420, already a trained painter, he took the habits of the Dominican order. Due to his religious condition, art historians have often treated him as a figure apart from his contemporaries. Instead, this catalog maintains that he fully participated in the artistic, political and social movements of his time, and that his work is on a par with that of Brunelleschi, Ghiberti, Donatello, Masaccio, Uccello and Filippo Lippi, all artists which are also present in this volume. These great Florentine masters invented new ways of making architecture, of constructing space through perspective, and of representing the human figure in sculpture and painting. The author of this generously illustrated book, which contains two essays on the Florence of the time seen by Fra Angelico and on his work seen from Spain, is Carl Brandon Strehlke, who is responsible for numerous studies on the Renaissance masters of the fifteenth century. Ana González Mozo, an expert in Italian pictorial techniques, has focused on the findings offered by the technical study of the Prado Museum’s Annunciation altarpiece, and its importance to better understand the creative process of a work of the Renaissance.
