Cai Guo-Qiang. Head On
Cai Guo-Qiang (*1957) is one of the most famous contemporary artists from China. Now based in New York, the multimedia artist combines symbols and techniques from the Middle Kingdom with Western elements. Feng shui dragons, Chinese medicine, fireworks, and gunpowder are the ingredients of his fascinating oeuvre. This approach was also seen in the first Chinese Pavilion, which he curated, at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005.
This book, produced in close cooperation with the artist, is a collection of Cai Guo-Qiangs latest works, conceived for Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin. These include an installation with 99 wolves, a large-format gunpowder drawing, and a video of a spectacular fireworks display held at the Berlin venue. A selection of earlier works completes the book designed in a kindred spirit by Stefan Sagmeister.
