Is it possible to understand Israel? Sixty years after the State of Israel was formally established, many people still fear for its continued existence – others want to destroy it.

In summer 2008 The Frankfurt Jewish Museum has created a new platform for access to Israel. Contemporary art is initially the red thread – other forms of discussion continue the debate.

Art offers opportunities to present or represent our own, often radical access to reality, history, our dreams, fears, wishes and feelings. To this end, artists rely on a whole host of different means and media: photography, video, painting, sculpture and installations. The key is often their own origins and history, something on which they also reflect through the distance afforded by art.

Jewish artists from Israel take centre stage in this title that accompanies the exhibition, rounded off by non-Jewish artists who concern themselves with Israel.
