Ivorypress at ARCOmadrid 2014. Booth 7A07
Between 19 and 23 February Ivorypress will participate in the 33rd edition of the international contemporary art fair ARCOmadrid. This is the third time that Ivorypress attends the fair, a space for the promotion of its artists in the Spanish and international markets.
As part of the general programme of ARCOmadrid, Ivorypress’s stand will present works by Spanish artists such as Jerónimo Elespe, of whom two of his recently created polyptics will be exhibited, as well as Cristina Iglesias, who will show the sculptures of her series Pozos (Wells) and two unique pieces screen-printed on mother-of-pearl silk that make up the series E.S. (Estudio 11 y 12) (2010). As for photography, the Ivorypress stand will exhibit two large-format works by German photographer Thomas Struth: Buksoe Dong (Pyöngyang, 2007) and Acropolis Museum (Athens, 2009); images that show the peculiar way in which Struth creates panoramic images in a clear and neutral manner, to allow the architecture to speak for itself. At the fair, the concurrence of Thomas Struth and Cristina Iglesias’s work will offer a taste of the joint exhibition by the artists that will open at Ivorypress in May, running parallel to PHotoEspaña.
Another of the international photographers that Ivorypress will present at ARCOmadrid is the South Korean artist Bohnchang Koo, whose first exhibition in Spain took place at the gallery in 2013. Three photographs from the series Interiors (2003) and Portraits of Time (1998) have been selected for the occasion, drawing attention to Koo’s line of work in which he explores the nuances and shapes of different white surfaces. Juan Uslé will also be represented at the Ivorypress stand with photographs. This Spanish artist based in New York is part of a generation of abstract painters that came into international prominence in the eighties. His photographic work, although lesser known than his pictorial work, is fundamental for the creation of his paintings, offering inspiration and keys for its interpretation.
Also on show at the gallery space at the fair will be the work Les Couleurs Suite, Les Magentas #1 (2012) by Pedro Cabrita Reis, exhibited in Spain for the first time and which continues the line of work that the Portuguese artist showed in his exhibition Los Rojos, which took place at Ivorypress in 2012. The balance, power and classicism that define his work is evident in the large surfaces of monochrome paint over construction materials of the piece. Monochromatism is also the foundation of the paintings of the young German artist Daniel Lergon, represented by Ivorypress, who will show two of his latest large- format works at ARCOmadrid, made of white lacquer on retroreflective fabric.
Ivorypress’s selection of works for the fair is completed with a huanhuali wood sculpture by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei entitled F-Size (2011), in which he revisits traditional oriental materials to create a sphere in which he studies proportion and shape. Parallel to ARCOmadrid Ivorypress Space will host the second exhibition in the gallery of the Cuban duo Los Carpinteros. The show, entitled Bazar, comprises their latest work, which evidences concerns surrounding the human figure—whether physiological, ideological or related to consumerism—from an anthropological perspective.
