Opening: Under the Surface
On 28 November Ivorypress presented a solo show of ceramic works by Austrian artist Roland Summer.
For more than three decades, Roland Summer has been expanding the boundaries between ceramic vessel and decorative object. His work is produced through the slow processes of handbuilding and coiling, creating his pieces in a way reminiscent of architectural constructions. Indeed, Summer’s training as an architect is evident in his body of work, which also contains biomorphic elements. Earlier works (his ‘pairs’, which consisted of a juxtaposition of two vessels) investigated the negative space between two parts, which in turn led the artist to the forms that was shown in the exhibition at Ivorypress, made by melting together different parts.
