The Space of the Book: A Workshop about Design and Self-Publishing

Ivorypress, in collaboration with Dídac Ballester and Victor Arráez, has organised the workshop ‘El espacio del libro‘ (The Space of the Book), which will take place in the bookshop during the last week of the exhibition Books beyond Artists.

Ballester and Arráez are two graphic designers and design teachers who work from Valencia and Mallorca respectively. They have collaborated on different projects about editorial design and are united by a particular interest for the book in its widest sense. This workshop intends to incite reflections surrounding the space of the book, with its design as starting point.

The workshop’s twelve hours will be divided in three consecutive days. The first day will be dedicated to the concept of space in a book and a debate will take place. The teachers will provide references or milestones that are relevant to the debate and will ask the students to come up with an idea, question or personal thought about space.

On the second day students will receive their largest workload. They must compile material to reproduce their idea and develop it in editorial format. The teachers will assist them through this entire process, helping each student to use the tools or suggesting solutions for the problems that might come up.

On the third day the students will finish their publications, they will all be reviewed in a group and a debate about the conclusions of this exercise will take place.
