John Gerrard

John Gerrard (Dublin, Ireland, 1974) received a BFA from The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, Oxford University. During this time he made his first experiments with 3D scanning as a form of sculptural photography. He undertook postgraduate studies at The School of The Art Institute of Chicago and Trinity College, Dublin, and in 2002 was awarded a Pépinières Residency at Ars Electronica, Linz, where he developed his first works in Realtime 3D. In 2006, the artist discovered a single archival image of the North American Dust Bowl which generated an artistic response, entitled Dust Storm (Dalhart, Texas), 2007. This work was presented in the group exhibition Equal, That Is, To the Real Itself, curated by Linda Norden at Marian Goodman Gallery, New York, in 2007. Other group exhibitions include Infinitum at Palazzo Fortuny, Venice, (2009), Academia at L’Ecole de Beaux-Arts, Paris (2008), Existencias at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (2007), The 4th Seoul International Media Art Biennale at Seoul Museum of Art (2006) and Independents at the Liverpool Biennial (2004). Recent solo presentations of Gerrard’s work include Cuban School at Simon Preston Gallery, New York (2010), Sow Farm: What You See is Where You're At, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh (2010), John Gerrard at Thomas Dane Gallery, London (2010), Directions: John Gerrard at Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C. (2009), Animated Scene, 53rd International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia (2009) or Oil Stick Work at Simon Preston Gallery, New York (2009). The exhibition John Gerrad at Ivorypress was his first solo show in Spain, where he presented his new work Cuban School (Sancti Spiritus), which was also commissioned by Ivorypress. John Gerrard lives and works between Dublin and Vienna.
