This book «Czech Photography of the Nineties» serves towards a better orientation in current Czech photographic work. This book accompanies the exhibition of the same name in the Chicago Cultural Center, the hitherto largest and most representative display of Czech photography in the USA. It is a markedly innovated version of the exhibition «Certitudes and Searching in Czech Photography of the Nineties» which in 1996, first at the Prague Castle and later in other places in several countries in Europe, presented the works of thirty prominent Czech photographers in a wide spectrum of styles, subjects and motifs. In comparison with the original version more than a quarter of the photographers and even more photographs were exchanged so that the new version of the exhibition, as well as of the book, tries to present the most up-to-date view of the Czech photographic scene in the nineties. And so presented are artists who long since belong to the certitudes of Czech photography, for instance, Josef Koudelka, Jan Saudek, Antonin Kratochvil, Viktor Kolar, Jindrich Streit, Jan Reich, Pavel Hecko, Jiri Hanke, Jaroslav Rajzik, Pavel Mara, Bohdan Holomicek, Jaroslav Barta, Pavel Banka or Jaroslav Kucera, photographers of the middle generation who made pronounced headway in the eighties (Ales Kunes, Zdenek Lhotak, Jan Pohribny, Ivan Pinkava, Michal Macku, Vaclav Jirasek, Karel Cudlin, Vaclav Podesat, Tomki Nemec, Lukas Jasansky with Martin Polak and others), as well as younger and the youngest authors who created their first noteworthy works in the nineties, for instance, Michaela Brachtlova, Igor Sefr or Robert Silverio. Also represented are the prominent Czech artists Veronika Bromova and JiriDavid, who often use photographs in their works, similarly as the three Slovak photographers with Czech citizenship, Rudo Prekop, Tono Stano and Miro Svolik.
