Georg Baselitz: Werkverzeichnis der Druckgraphik 1983 1989
Virtuosity in the first series of post-war modern art
Right at the beginning of his artistic career, Georg Baselitz was interested in printmaking. As a scholarship holder at the Villa Romana in Florence, he begins in 1965 to collect the Italian mannerist Parmigianino. He said in an interview: “I liked printmaking for two reasons. First, it is the simplest fixed way of reproducing an artistic idea. On the other hand, it was also made for the small purse, for small people. «His first etchings date from 1963/64, woodcuts to 1966, followed in 1977 by linocuts – works predominantly blackened by Fred Jahn at Johannes Gachnang in a two-volume catalog raisonné. have been published in white (vol. I: 1963-1974; vol. II: 1974-1982). As in his paintings and sculptures, graphic art also deals with themes such as heroes, shepherds, eagles, trees and much more. The present volume, now in full color, shows in a unique technical brilliance about 280 works numbers from the years 1983-1989. There is no question that Georg Baselitz’s oeuvre in print stands independently alongside his paintings and sculptures. The artist has not only permeated the medium in the diversity of his various technical approaches and solutions for decades, but has also brought him into the forefront of post-war modern art through his unprecedented virtuosity.
