I preferred to use black for my work simply because I never had the means to set up a darkroom for colour¿ [with colour] one could do some very chic things, monochrome, really lovely¿ using colours as drab as possible. After all I always get caught up by colour, it inspires me with a purer feeling, more aesthetic, whereas black and white is more ideological, more cerebral. Ugo Mulas
An essay by Uliano Lucas ad Tatiana Agliani, an interview between Pier Giovanni Castagnoli and Uliano Lucas introduce Ugo Mulas’ experiments with colour. For the first time in forty years the author’s archives yield pictures of artists on their own or with their works: Andy Wharol, Roy Lichtenstein, Mark Rothko, Renato Guttuso, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Giacometti, Emilio Vedova, Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi, Giacomo Manzù, Alberto Burri, Fausto Melotti, Alexander Calder, Robert Raushenberg, Kenneth Noland, Tom Wesselman, Cleas Oldenburg, Jasper Johns¿ all captured in their most typical postures, transformed into works of art in their own right.
