Public Relations is a distillation of a photographic project begun in 1969 when Garry Winogrand was awarded as a Guggenheim Fellowship to photograph what he called the influence of the media on events.” Winogrand has assembled here a gallery of America’s tribal rites: marches, press conferences, award ceremonies, a birthday party, and a moon shot-a unilateral report on the world of ersatz ritual and the pseudo-event in the late 1960s. This book was originally published to accompany the 1977 exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art.
